March 2019

Posted: Monday 1st April 2019

On 4th March, we met with our Mockinbird coach Judy. We used this session to identify key members of our implementation working group.

On 5th March, we were invited to attend the National Fostering Framework annual conference. Every local authority fostering service in Wales was represented. We presented the Mockingbird model and received really positive feedback and interest. Some local authorities had considered Mockingbird, but had chosen to implement elements of peer support without utilising the full model. There was a lot of interest in feeding back on our progress and findings.

On 13th March, we attended the childrens services forum. This group includes local Councillors, a foster carer, head of social services, service manager, participation officer and 2 young people. This was our first presentation to young people about the Mockingbird model. The model was very well received by all. We have been invited to attend the young people's participation group.

On 20th March, we attended the Mockingbird leaders workshop in Leeds. This was useful to make contact with established Mockingbird constellations in England. We have been invited to visit constellations in Wallsall and Stockport. A clear message from this workshop was that while The Fostering Network are still measuring and proving the effectiveness of the model and benefit of more frequent add-hoc respite arrangments, constellations should stick to the model and not deviate by encouraging carers to take 1-2 weeks holiday without the children.

Also on 20th March, Flintshire Social Services received a visit from Albert Heeney, Director of Social Services for Wales with Welsh Government.  As part of the showcase on social services , Jenny presented our work in relation to Mockingbird.  This is of interest to Albert as improving outcomes for looked after children is a Welsh Assembly priority.

On 22nd March, we presented the model to a group of Independant Reviewing Officers. Again the feedback was very positive.

On 29th March, we held our first Implementation Working Group. This meeting was chaired by the Service Manager and attended by representatives from child care social work teams, young people's participation group, safeguarding, targetted support, fostering and The Fostering Network. The first meeting set out the purpose of the group to be advocates for their service area and the Mockingbird model. The next meeting is set for 30th April. terms of reference, time plan and expectations have been shared.
